Sociology at Birmingham has a long history, the present Department of Sociology was formed in 2003. Its undergraduate programmes are among the best in the country, having recently been ranked fifth in Guardian league tables for Sociology and tenth for Media Studies.

Research
The Department has four main research clusters: Social Theory; Ethnicity and Multiculturalism; Political Sociology; Culture and Media.
Undergraduate courses
The Department currently runs two very successful Single Honours undergraduate programmes: BA Sociology and BA Media, Culture and Society.
Postgraduate degrees
The Department offers a range of taught MA programmes including; Sociology; Media, Culture and Society and Social and Political Theory.
