Ross’s academic interests centre around four main areas: Recent French Social Theory; Ethics and Technology; Marxism and Postmodernity; and Philosophy and Social Science. He has published extensively on the relationship between the concept of truth and the historical development of the social sciences (particularly sociology), and on modern and postmodern theories of culture and identity. His books include Truth and Social Science: From Hegel to Deconstruction; Culture and Identity Critical Theories; and Marxism After Modernity: Politics, Culture and Social Transformation. His most recent work has concentrated on the relationship between Marxism and postmodernism – particularly the attempts of Lyotard, Derrida, Hardt and Negri, and Deleuze and Guattari to reconfigure the political demand of Marx after the technological transformation of modern capitalism.
Ross is keen to supervise research students on the following areas: social and cultural theory, aesthetics and politics, new technologies and social practices, Marxism and postmodernism, and recent French social theory.
