John did his first degree in Humanities at Manchester Polytechnic as a mature student. He did an MA in Social History of Art at Leeds University and a PhD on representations of HIV/AIDS in media culture at Manchester Metropolitan University. Prior to coming to Birmingham John was Lecturer in Visual Culture at Leeds Metropolitan University.
His research interests include cultural theories of visual culture, ethics of representation, alternative media and film production, contemporary theories of artistic and cultural resistance. He has published articles on the subject of representations of HIV/AIDS and edited a book on the artist R.B. Kitaj.John has co-authored a book on how Bloody Sunday has been represented within a range of media and cultural practices.
John is keen to supervise students on the following areas: contemporary visual culture, cultural theory, aesthetics and politics, and alternative and resistant practices of cultural production.
